Hancock-Wood Electric Cooperative (HWE) held its 68th Annual Meeting in Findlay on Saturday, September 17 to a crowd of around 2,000 people, which is believed to have been the largest customer party in northwest Ohio.
“Consumer cooperatives like ours are owned by the people who buy our electricity,” said President & CEO George Walton. “And these people who came help us grow and proper.”
The meeting covered several co-op business and financial items, but also included a fun atmosphere with a theme focused around “Our Strength Comes from Members.” Children’s activities, booths and other giveaways added to the excitement of the day, preceded by a free buffet meal of pork chops and BBQ beef sandwiches. Even restaurant founder and icon Bob Evans appeared and signed autographs for members. HWE also conducted a successful food drive, which benefited the City Mission of Findlay and the BG Christian Food Pantry.
The results of recent trustee elections were announced, as well as the swearing in of each elected trustee at the meeting. Members from District 2 elected Clark Duncan; this district includes Webster, Center, Portage, Liberty, Henry and Bloom in Wood County. James Demler was elected in District 7, which includes Liberty, Eagle and Jackson Townships of Hancock County. Tom Kagy was re-elected in District 8, which includes Riley of Putnam County, Richland of Allen County, Liberty and Washington of Hardin County; and Union, Orange and Van Buren of Hancock County.
Featured speaker Jim Bausell, COO, Touchstone Energy, provided an update on the latest marketing efforts. Walton also addressed the crowd on company engineering and operations improvements, and Board Chairman Don Barker reported on the company highlights over the past year.
