Our fall member trip takes you to one of Ohio's greatest architectural landmarks, the historic Ohio State Reformatory, also known as the Mansfield Reformatory.
With the cornerstone laid in 1886, this castle-like prison was designed as a reformatory for young offenders. Abandoned in 1990, the original cell-blocks and administration areas remain intact. Four major motion pictures have been filmed on this location, including "The Shawshank Redemption" and  "Air Force One,” and our 3-hour tour will explore its Hollywood, haunted and historical aspects. Even the Travel Channel declared it one of their "101 Things to Do Before You Die,” as well as one of the "Scariest Places on Earth.” Keep in mind there will be significant walking and some stair climbing on this tour.
Rest assured, the rest of our day won’t be frightening! We’ll have  lunch at The Cabin Restaurant, where you’ll enjoy a filling hot meal in the countryside overlooking a one-acre lake. Our day will end with a brief stop at the Eatmor Bundt Company and Twisted Fig Tea Room,  located in Mansfield’s Historic Carrousel District. Each attendee will get a Cinn-a-Bundt and tea, the perfect after meal afternoon treat direct from their eclectic tea room. You may even want to buy something extra to take home.
This trip is open to all Hancock-Wood members and their friends and costs $42 a person, which covers transportation, tours and lunch. The bus will leave the Hancock-Wood parking lot on Thursday, September 18, 2008 at 6:15 a.m. and will return by 3:30 p.m. (coffee and donuts will be available before the bus leaves).
