FAQ - Meter Reading

Who is reading our meters?
A company called STS (Specialized Technical Services) reads your meters. They usually drive white Jeeps, but regardless of the vehicle, they always have an HWE logo on their vehicle. STS is our contracted meter reader company based in Kentucky. They hire people locally and work out of the HWE office. Their employees do carry ID badges if you should have any questions.

Right now we're in the process of installing small “Turtles” on all of the system’s 12,100 electric meters. Turtles are small transmitters that report your power use each month. By installing them, HWE can save the Cooperative – and ultimately you – money, as well as provide better customer service. Many Co-op’s across the state and country already use the Turtle system and can attest to its efficient service. Turtle systems work by sending data slowly – hence the name “Turtle” – yet reliably and accurately through your power line. The Co-op hopes to have all the system’s meters outfitted with the devices by 2007.
